To be additive is to exist within a medium that appreciates over time, contributing to the knowledge of human knowledge rather than succumbing to the inevitable depreciation of modern software. While traditional creative works—books, film, music—naturally persist and gain value across generations, most digital tools are ephemeral, requiring constant maintenance and reconstruction just to remain functional. True thinking requires an environment where our efforts aren’t lost to the sands of the timeline; it demands we build in ways that ensure our digital contributions retain their sovereignty and utility long after the original context of their creation has passed.
Essential Insight
Software today is often subtractive: it demands constant labor to exist in the present. We must strive for additive systems that allow our work to live on in its own right, becoming part of a permanent, evolving human heritage.
